The games mentioned on the previous page could either singly or in combination be the foundation of modern day poker. However, as poker is basically considered an American game, the game seems to have a French connection as the French were considered the most avid gamblers and card players.
The card game "Poque" was brought to Canada by the French colonists in the 17th century. This game was influenced by the game "Primero" in which bluffing and betting at high stakes was common. The game did not gain popularity till the beginning of the 18th century. Later when New Orleans was founded by a group of Canadian-French settlers, the game spread from Louisiana upwards towards the Mississippi river and the rest of the country.
When civil war broke at the time, soldiers used to play poque to vile away time. As per the theories available, different versions of the game developed during this period as there were soldiers deputed in different regions across North America. It was during this period that the variations like "Draw" and "Stud" came into being.

The period of civil unrest was the time when poker emerged as a game and was christened as poker by a gambler named Green.
Written references of Jonathan H. Green reveal the rules of the game that was commonly played on the Mississippi riverboats. This was the poque played in a variety of ways. However gamblers adapted to the "Cheating Game" and found it more honest and challenging than a former game known as the 3-card monte. The "Cheating game" gained popularity and Green documented the game in his book "An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling: Poker". Green's book dates back to 1840's and as mentioned the period of civil unrest in America, contributed a lot to the popularity of poker.
Other references to the game have been found in Dragon Campaigns to the Rocky Mountains by J. Hildreth and Thirty Years Passed Among the Players in England and America by an English comedian by the name Joe Cowell. The earliest form of poker was known to be played with 20 cards that were dealt evenly among four players. There was no draw and there were few combinations on which bets could be placed. These were one pair, two pair, triplets and full.
During the Civil War period, many saloons having a poker table sprang up in various towns of America. However the course of the game changed with the joker being introduced in 1875 and the European hold on poker came to an end.
Since the birth of poker, it has changed many forms and numerous variations of the game have sprung up. It is the most popular and therefore the world's most played card game. There have been numerous changes between the forms of poker as well. There were basically three versions of the game that took the crown of dominating the game. These are as follows:
5 Card Draw - This form of poker ruled the gambling arena and poker in particular for a century. The time of this rising was during the American Civil War.
7 Card Stud - The second to gain popularity after 5 card draw was 7 card stud. The game ruled the poker scene for nearly 40 years. The credit for the popularity of 7 card stud goes to the thriving casino industry of Las Vegas.
Texas Hold'em - Since the 1970's the Texas Hold'em has ruled the poker game arena and is till date considered the 'Cadillac of poker' or the Royal Flush of poker. The World Series of Poker featured it as the title game and since then the popularity of the game has only increased with it being played in concrete casinos and in web casinos as well.
There are other variations of the game as well. These are Draw Poker, Omaha, Stud Poker and Razz but these don't stand in contention with the thrill and excitement of No Limit Texas Hold'em.
Present day popularity of poker denotes that it is game to stay. Now with the advent of web casinos and introduction of poker at these web casinos, more and more people are joining the online community of poker players.
